Overview
The global pandemic and increasing environmental issues have highlighted the need for robust risk identification and management. Worldwide regulators and investors are demanding that organisations identify and manage their ESG responsibilities.
Whether it be planning for strategic shocks such as changing trade relationships and regional regulators imposing new compliance requirements, or local initiatives to respond to data protection or the day-to-day management of operational risks, today organizations need be proactive in identifying the risks they face and respond to them appropriately.
Across all sectors, private, public and others, organizations are putting in place enterprise risk management frameworks to derive benefits from a more systematic approach and respond to these challenges. In all cases, the risk culture needs to be supported with an effective control framework and a strong internal audit team is essential to the success.
This course addresses the interlocking areas of enterprise risk management, mitigation and internal control drawing upon international Standards and best practices. It examines, contrasts and compares risk management approaches as formulated by COSO and ISO 31000. We will discuss the identification and management of strategic risk, maximising benefits from the ESG agenda and integration of risk management with internal control.
Topics covered include the COSO ERM Framework and ISO 31000; why use enterprise risk management; approaches to enterprise risk management; identifying and managing strategic risk; developments in ESG reporting and management; creating a risk management function; risk assessment and evaluation of internal controls design and testing their operating effectiveness.
The course will review the authoritative guidance and look at its practical application. We will draw on real life case studies and participants’ experiences to examine and discuss the issues and show how to apply the guidance.

Alan Mayo FCA is a chartered accountant from the UK with over 30 years’ professional experience, including external audit, risk management and internal controls. Alan began his career with PwC where he spent 10 years consulting and managing external audits in the private sector.
After that he spent a further 10 years as a consultant with PwC leading training programs supporting major systems and process change, predominantly in the public sector.
On leaving PwC Alan formed his own training business which he has been running for the past 20 years. During this time, he has worked on a wide range of financial training projects within the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.
