Gas/LNG for Power and Energy Markets Master Class
8-10 July 2015
The Capital Empire, Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa,
EVENT OVERVIEW
Effective training is crucial in today’s fast-paced global energy market. This 3-day Executive Master Class is an intensive training course aimed at providing attendees a comprehensive overview of the gas-to-power market and the related strategic issues. The emerging dynamics and paradigm shifts seen in the energy sector, especially in the development of unconventional gas sources has become a key issue and it is more crucial than ever for energy market participants and policymakers to keep abreast of the global and local developments. More recently the declining oil price has also created threats and opportunities that market participants find hard to comprehend. Gas is increasingly playing a major role in electricity generation and gas-fired technologies such as combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) which have become the technology of choice in many parts of the world. Understanding the economics of gas-to-power vis-à-vis other generation technologies hence is pivotal to investment planning, power system economics and policy design.
The Executive Master Class aims to provide a comprehensive overview of gas/LNG from the context of electricity generation. It will introduce the issues related to global hydrocarbon development and how they could impact on regional and local power markets, presenting the question on the role and feasibility of gas/LNG as an alternative fuel in power generation. The critical drivers – generation economics, global oil & gas markets, local market dynamics and geopolitical issues will be examined. The recent decline in oil price is a case in point where the dynamics of oil market can have significant impact on the overall energy market including LNG/gas.

MODULE 1: GAS AND ELECTRICITY; AFRICA IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT
It is impossible to evaluate the potential of gas for electricity generation in any part of Africa without first understanding the current nature of its related markets, namely the global wholesale gas market and the local energy / power markets. This introductory module will assess these areas from an African perspective, giving an overview of the major issues in gas supply/demand and the key drivers of power markets.
MODULE 2: THE ROLE OF GAS IN THE POWER MARKET AND THE IMPACT OF UNCONVENTIONAL GAS
Globally gas has become increasingly integral to the generation and pricing of electricity. This module will show the growing role of gas in power generation, and examine the impact of unconventional sources of gas (e.g. shale gas) on global power markets.
CASE STUDY: The case study presents an overview of the historical trends of North America gas supply in the context of the impact of shale gas on market trends, with particular focus on coal to gas switching in electricity generation. The case will examine the increasingly important role of gas in the electricity market, carbon emission reduction and technology development. The case will focus on examining the question on how North America ‘gas revolution’ could indirectly impact on the power markets in Africa.
MODULE 3: GAS-TO-POWER TECHNOLOGIES
The 1980s saw the emergence of new gas turbine technologies that precipitated a growing significance of gas in the production of electricity worldwide. More recently there has been increasing demand for gas-to-power technologies as a result of LNG enabling gas to be transported to previously unreachable markets. This module looks into the relative costs, efficiencies and benefits of gas-to-power technologies.
MODULE 4: POWER GENERATION ECONOMICS
The viability of gas-to-power as a realistic option for electricity generation in Africa depends on its economics of generation. This module will focus on the fundamental economics of gas-to-power technologies, conventional generation (such as coal, nuclear and oil), and renewable generation (such as wind, solar, hydro and biomass).
MODULE 5: THE CONTRIBUTION OF GAS FIRED GENERATION IN SYSTEM PLANNING
This module will cover power market dynamics, including the implications of gas-to-power on system planning and its interaction with the penetration of renewables.
MODULE 6: OVERVIEW OF COMMERCIAL GAS AND LNG CONTRACTS
This module will focus on the contracting strategies of gas supply for gas fired plants. It will cover the fundamental aspects of sale and purchase of gas and LNG, including short versus long term sales agreements and price indexation.
MODULE 7: REGULATION AND POLICY
This module considers the impact of regulation and policy in gas-to-power market. Government regulations and policies should take in to account the wider requirements in meeting energy security, renewables and carbon emissions targets.
MODULE 8: THE FUTURE OF GAS-TO-POWER
The workshop concludes with an overview of the current trends of gas and gas-to-power and presents likely scenarios on future outlook of gas and its role within the power industry.
