Course Organisation and Methodology

The course will be delivered in a live virtual format over 4 half-days. We aim to maximise your learning experience by making best use of the meeting platform. Your expert instructor is experienced in the use of technology for delivering virtual classroom learning. You will be encouraged to interact with your instructor and peers using a variety of methods including:

  • Facilitated group discussions using chat box and audio etc
  • Exercises and case studies to illustrate key issues worked individually or in virtual breakouts
  • Polls and quizzes

We will keep presentations short and provide a workbook containing case studies, guidance material and summaries of key learning points.

This course is specially designed to let you have a new and deeper understanding of how to effectively manage shutdowns and turnarounds such as plant outages and refits etc. in all key industries. With this understanding you will gain increased ability to plan for and manage large maintenance jobs.

This course features exercises, specific checklists, procedures and strategies to improve your current shutdown planning and execution. The course also includes examples to demonstrate the significant points.

The Master Checklist Series of Exercises (one list for each phase) is unique for this course. Each student will receive and review a master checklist developed over the last 20 years of items that have caused problems on past shutdowns. Joel Levitt

Joel Levitt is a leading trainer of maintenance professionals. He has trained more than 20,000 maintenance leaders from 3000 organizations in 39 countries in over 600 sessions. Since 1980 he has been the President of Springfield Resources, a management consulting firm that services clients of all sizes on a wide range of maintenance issues.

He has 40 years of experience in many facets of maintenance including process control design, source equipment inspector, electrician, field service technician, maritime operations and property management. Prior to that, Levitt worked for a CMMS vendor and as an owner/manager in manufacturing.

He is a frequent speaker at maintenance and engineering conferences and has written 11 popular maintenance management texts. He has also published over 200 articles on the topic. Levitt has served on the safety board of ANSI, Small Business United, National Family Business Council and on the executive committee of the Miquon School. He is a member of AFE and Vice President of the Philadelphia chapter.

This course is for heavy maintenance environments, including large factories, refineries, power plants, chemical plants, mines, and other extensive facilities. It is precisely for project managers, outage planners, planners, schedulers, maintenance managers, project engineers, supervisors, maintenance engineers and people in training for these positions.

This course is also designed for contractors who manage entire or parts of client shutdowns. Prior background in Project Management would be helpful but not essential.

Exercises

Different people are different types of learners. The course uses various proven training modalities. It features several exercises to help enhance the training experience and teach specific skills to help manage shutdowns.

The Master Checklist Series of Exercises (one list for each phase) is unique for this course. Each student will receive and review a master checklist developed over the last 20 years of items that have caused problems on past shutdowns. The checklists are updated with new projects and technologies.

Some Other Exercises’ Learning Objectives

  • The Report Card Exercise introduces the student to the class. They get to evaluate their shutdown program and see where there is room for improvement.
  • In the exercise on Meetings, the student can look at the meeting rules they follow and pick some areas where extra attention would enhance the shutdown effort.
  • Preparing a Typical Timeline Exercise is designed to show the student the benefit of managing the shutdown intensively from conception to closeout.
  • Estimating Exercise takes a typical shutdown job and shows the students how to micro-plan a job.
  • Do you have enough time to plan and schedule the Shutdown properly? The Planning Lead Times Exercise will show that and show how much you need.
  • The Critical Path Method (CPM) Exercise tests the student’s new knowledge of shutdown activity scheduling. It starts with a worklist and has the students develop a CPM network diagram highlighting the critical path and the Shutdown duration.
